Harold Rhodes is best known for inventing the Fender-Rhodes Piano, an instrument whose iconic sound has been loved by musicians for decades. However, Mr. Rhodes’s passion was music education! He was driven to innovate and accelerate the process of learning the piano.
In the 1930’s, Mr. Rhodes created a national one-hour syndicated radio program to teach listeners how to play the piano.
During World War II, Mr. Rhodes was commissioned by the US Army to develop a piano method for rehabilitating soldiers. Through his innovative method, more than 250,000 soldiers learned to play. Today, Rhodes method books are on display in the Smithsonian Institute. Mr. Rhodes is the only recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from NARAS (Grammy) for teaching piano.
